Full question:
Almost seven years ago my girlfriend got pregnant, with what I thought was my child. She convinced me to marry her and join the military to help pay for the medical expenses. We were married for two years while I was in the military and I raised my son during this time with her. I caught her cheating on me and filed for divorce. She then moved to Florida with my son and I moved to Tennessee. I continued to send her monthly child support, provided medical insurance for my son and frequently traveled to FL to visit him. My family, that lives near him, in FL also had a big part in raising him. He is now almost six years old and I recently found out thru a paternity test that he is not mine. My ex wife has also just recently remarried. I am not looking to seek the child support money I have already paid, but would like to discontinue paying her. I also want to find out about having my name removed from the birth certificate.

Answer:
I am assuming you have a court order for child support. I don't know whether the paternity test was part or a paternity action in court, but if not, it may be necessary to file a paternity action to legally establish paternity. When paternity is established in court, the court will typically order the paternal father to pay child support payments.
If both parents agree to sign an Affidavit Acknowledging Paternity, the parents do not have to go to court to establish paternity for their child. A previous order for child support may then be modified by petitioning the court.
You will need to contact the vital statistics office in the state where the birth certificate was issued to inquire about the requirements for amending a birth certificate, as rules vary by state.
