How would I protect my husband's income in the event he has to enter a nursing home?

Full question:

I can't seem to find anyone who can give us this information, but here is my question. My husband is quite ill and should he, at sometime, have to go into a nursing home in the near future, would the nursing home take all of his income which is: Social Security, a retirement pension from his job and a disability pension from the VA. I am his spouse and we are both 70. I have only social security and would not be able to survive only on that. Is there a way to protect his sources of income.
