How Can I Get Records of an Internet Service Provider?

Full question:

Recently I received 2 anonymous messages sent from made-up people to my Facebook account informing me that my husband was cheating. I have filed a complaint with the local police authorities and now three weeks have gone by and I have not heard anything from the detective who is working the case. I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to make this process faster or if its a lost cause. Some of my friends seem to think that because the messages were non-threatening that the detective will not be able to subpoena this persons information from their internet provider based on the IP address, how true is that information?

Answer:

Sometimes the wheels of justice grind slowly. We suggest you be patient but persistent. Polite followup calls to check on the status of the matter may prove the adage true that the "squeaky wheel gets the grease". It is possible to subpoena ISP records in cases where a threat has not been made. Such records may be requested in both civil and criminal matters.
