Full question:
I am 14 years old. Both of my parents are alcoholics and I can't depend on them. I have been in foster care for 3 or 4 months now. Is there a way that I can get a job and take care of myself. I have heard the word emancipation. Is it possible for a 14 year old to be emancipated?

Answer:
Emancipation allows a minor to gain independence from their parents. This can happen through marriage, becoming self-supporting, or a court order. In some cases, a minor may petition the court to be emancipated, especially if their parents are unfit. Common ways to achieve emancipation include marriage, reaching the age of majority, joining the military, or obtaining a court order. Parental consent is typically needed, unless there is misconduct that leads the minor to leave home.
In Minnesota, the age of majority is eighteen. The state laws do not explicitly outline the grounds or process for emancipation. However, case law indicates that a minor could be emancipated through legal marriage or parental consent. For minors aged sixteen or older involved in a child protection case, a juvenile court may allow an independent living situation, which is similar to emancipation.
