Full question:
I live in Michigan, and I am being stalked by my ex-boyfriend. Last night I saw him standing near my garden patch at around 11 pm. I want to move out from my current residence and go to another sub-division without his knowledge. But my lease period is not yet over. Can I end my lease before the end date? What steps do I take for the same?

Answer:
In Michigan, if you are a victim of domestic violence, stalking, or sexual assault, you can end your lease early without paying rent for the remainder of the lease term, provided your lease was signed after October 5, 2010.
To terminate your lease, you must notify your landlord in writing that you are seeking an early release under MCL 554.601b. Along with your notice, include documentation that supports your situation, such as a personal protection order, a police report, or a statement from a qualified third party.
After you give notice, you will need to pay your current month's rent and the next month's rent. Your lease will officially end when you move out.
