What is the proper process for terminating my lease since the company I work for is transferring me?

Full question:

I have been a tenant of this building for 3 years and always signed a 1 year lease. My lease is up this month. I know I will be moving out of the country in 2 months and asked my mgmt company what to do? They told me to cross out term 12 months and write in 1 month, sign the lease and send it back. That does not seem right. Shouldn't I have something that says they approve a one month extention or something?

Answer:

If they accept the revised lease, it is a binding contract. It is the other party's right to choose not to accept the changes.

FAQs

Yes, a new lease typically voids the old lease once both parties agree to the terms and sign the new document. This means that the old lease is no longer enforceable. However, if the new lease is not formally accepted by the landlord, the original lease may still remain in effect. Always ensure that any changes are documented and agreed upon by both parties.
