Full question:
I rent a house in LA. My lease is about to end on may 1, and last night i got a letter (registered mail) stating that my lease will not be renewed because the owner of the house intends to move in. my lease states that 30 days written notice which they gave. someone told me that the landlord has to pay some amount to cover moving costs if they are making you leave. is that true? are there any rights that i have to extend my stay for being a good tenant who pays rent on time? when i moved in they said that the owner wanted someone who was not going to leave in a year, now they are kicking me out at exactly one year. had i known this, i would have never signed the lease for this house.

Answer:
Since your lease is ending on May 1, the landlord has the right to take possession of the property without needing to pay you, unless your lease specifically states otherwise. In California, landlords generally do not have to provide compensation for moving costs when they choose not to renew a lease for personal reasons, such as moving in themselves. Your lease requires a 30-day written notice, which you have received. Unfortunately, being a good tenant does not grant you additional rights to extend your stay beyond the lease terms. This content is for informational purposes only and is not legal advice.
