Full question:
I have a Web Site that is set up for Internet Advertising for Real Estate Agents, For Sale By Owner and Landlord/Tenants. I would like to make a service available free on my Web Site. The information provided in the service would be gleamed from local classifieds ads in locals newspapers. Do I need permission from the classified ad owner or the News Paper to publish there information on my Web Site? The News Paper is a Public source, but is it legal for me to copy from that source and publish that information in a free service area on my Web Site?

Answer:
Works that are not eligible for copyright protection includes
works that consist entirely of common knowledge and contain no original
work, such as calendars, rulers, height & weight charts, tape measures.
While a newspaper is widely circulated, it is not a public document,
such as a government publication. Newspapers typically require readers
to submit a reprint request for the material they publish.
