Full question:

I currently live in an apartment located in Connecticut. We just got a huge snow storm. My father & I live 3 doors away from each other in the same building. Besides myself, my father is the youngest person who resides here. There is now currently 10 inches of snow with ice on top of it making it very heavy. The snow has stopped. My question to you is, is there a law in Connecticut that states, the land lord is responsible for snow removal at all times? My father and I had to shovel a path from my car, his car and my step mom's car because we all have to be at work by 4 a.m. Can you assist me?

Answer:

I suggest contacting the local housing or tenants' association, as ordinances vary by local area, but it is typically a matter of negotiation in the lease terms. It is the landlord’s responsibility to make sure that the building is kept in a good state of repair, fit for habitation and to comply with any health, safety, housing and maintenance standards. Failure to clear the snow may be a breach of municipal safety, housing or maintenance standards.

During a snow storm, prioritize safety. Stay indoors if possible and avoid unnecessary travel. If you must go out, dress warmly and use proper footwear to prevent slips. Keep emergency supplies on hand, including food, water, and a flashlight. Stay updated on weather conditions and local advisories. If you live in an apartment, check your lease for snow removal responsibilities and communicate with your landlord if necessary.
