Full question:
I had an HVAC service done on my central air system on 7/15/05 from a contractor I had never used before. It was fixed and I never received a bill for the service. I have now received a bill for $335.00 to replace a $15.00 part more than 2 years after the job was done. I got no call or letter saying why the billing was never sent to me. Am I responsible for this? Should I offer to pay half to settle the bill?

Answer:
In New Jersey, the statute of limitations for a contract is six years. This means the contractor has up to six years to bill you for the service. Since you received the bill more than two years after the service, you are still within the time frame for them to collect payment. However, the lack of communication regarding the bill could be a point to discuss. Offering to pay half could be a way to settle the matter, but you are not legally obligated to do so.This content is for informational purposes only and is not legal advice.
