Can I use my maiden name for business and contracts after marriage?

Full question:

I took my husband's name upon marriage, it is not hyphenated. I actually have 2 last names i.e. name name, without a hyphentaion. I wanted to use my maiden name for business & to sign a copyright contract. Can I do that? Or do I have to use my new married name? I wanted to work in business and be known on these contracts with my maiden name. Or do I have to change my name back to my maiden name legally to do so?

Answer:

As long as you are not using your maiden name with the intent to defraud creditors, you can generally use it for business purposes. This means you can sign contracts and conduct business under your maiden name without needing to legally change your name back.

FAQs

Hyphenated last names can lead to complications, such as longer names that may be cumbersome to use. They can also create confusion in legal documents, especially if one partner does not consistently use the hyphenated name. Additionally, some organizations may have policies that complicate the use of hyphenated names, leading to potential issues with identification and record-keeping.
