Answer:

In Tennessee, any marriage between persons to whom license is issued, is valid and the issue is declared legitimate, although the nickname of the party has been used in the license, if the parties have consummated the marriage by cohabitation and can be identified as the persons between whom such marriage was solemnized.

This is stated in Tenn. Code. Ann.  §36-3-307. It states:

“Any marriage that may have been or may be celebrated between persons, by license regularly issued, is valid, and the issue thereof is declared legitimate, although the baptismal name of either party may be omitted in the license, or a nickname be used instead thereof; provided, that the parties have consummated the marriage by cohabitation, and can be identified as the persons between whom such marriage was solemnized.”

Therefore, your wife’s nickname in the marriage certificate may not invalidate your marriage.

FAQs

In Tennessee, there is no specific deadline for changing your last name after marriage. However, it is advisable to do so promptly to avoid confusion. You can start using your new name immediately after the marriage ceremony, but to update legal documents, such as your driver's license and Social Security card, you may need to provide a copy of your marriage certificate. Always check with the relevant agencies for their specific requirements.
