Full question:
We are a wholesale supplier of sheet metal products to mechanical sub contractors who in turn sub contract to a general contractor. We do business in different counties in VA, MD, and WV. I have contacted each county we do business in as to how we should go about filing a lien against these contractors and each county tells me that I probably need to speak to an attorney. Is there a basic procedure and/or paperwork that we need to achieve this and if so what is it?

Answer:
You will need to follow the procedures for filing a construction lien in each of the jurisdictions you mentioned as there is not a blanket procedure for all states. We are in the process of updating our construction lien forms, and are currently working on our Virginia forms. Please check back for updated forms. Our forms at the links below for Maryland and West Virginia have been updated.
